About Us

Our Philosophy

A thriving mind. Connecting through West African rhythms.

Our aim is to give our participants a mindful moment to re-connect with themselves. By focusing on a joyful activity that is also stimulating, we can rejuvenate ourselves and give ourselves a well-earned break.

Through the expression of drum and dance we can truly be ourselves and let it all go! We invite you to give it a go!

Finding a few minutes each day to do something mindful will help you to break out of the every day routine and bring some joy to your life!

Our mission

We are a small business passionate about mindful practice and West African rhythms. We support local West African drum and dance business across Australia to provide you with the highest quality teachers to improve your skills and have fun!

Katrina Brooks – Founder

“Drumming demands a focus like nothing else; the notes, the timing and the rhythm as well as listening to the rest of the music absorbs your attention.

Having suffered depression, drumming has helped improved my mental health by allowing me to get into the zone. Getting out of my own head and feeling into the music brings me great joy and calms my “monkey” mind. Mindfulness isn’t about stopping your thoughts, but focusing on something for a moment to brings you back to the present and out of the past or future.

I grew up dancing and have never ever stopped because it is so liberating. When you have stress and tension in your body, feeling the grooves and moving your body can help release some of this stuck energy. It’s completely freeing.

Mind the Beats was created out of my love for West African rhythms and I hope you can enjoy these sessions and connect with yourself through a mindful joyful practice!”
